ARATA

Manufacturers unt Suppliers of Computer Assistive Technology (MuSCAT)

Vision

To be a forum to raise issues concerning manufacturers and suppliers of communication and computer assistive technology.

Mission

To create a network for discussion, information exchange and advice within the SIG membership and to provide an identifiable body for communication external to the membership from suppliers of Communication/Computer Assistive Technology.

Goals

For the MuSCAT membership to discuss issues of mutual interest or concern primarily via e-mail or face-to-face when opportunities arise.

To be available as a 'group' to comment or advise on issues ARATA members may wish to feedback to manufacturers and suppliers.

To investigate issues which may affect our industry and share information with other members.

To act on any issues which the membership feels may improve the manufacture and supply of communication and computer assistive technology for our customers and ourselves.

To develop guidelines to negotiate with conference convenors the requirements and preferences of exhibitors at conferences which will help ensure a successful conference for delegates and exhibitors.

News update

Trade Exhibits:
The MuSCAT SIG has compiled a document of recommendations for the conference committee in an effort to improve the 'exhibit experience' for delegates and exhibitors. The document has been submitted to the ARATA Conference Committee, and it is hoped it will be a useful reference for ARATA and other conferences attended by MuSCAT members.
GST:
The GST discussion has abated for the time being as most companies set about meeting the new taxation reporting requirements. It appears that the majority of assistive technology equipment is GST free under the Medical Aids and Appliances Schedule 3 of the Tax Act. There are gaps in the Schedule 3 list however, and the next aim is to have the legislation changed to incorporate the missing items, or to lobby for a "blanket" exemption for equipment for people with disabilities (as under the old Sales Tax System). To date James Dean has been active in lobbying the relevant politicians. It is very much hoped that other ARATA members will undertake letter writing to politicians to highlight anomilies in a system where people with disabilities are now required to pay 10% extra for items that were previousy tax free.
