Pressure management in custom moulded seating

Jacinta Maurin - Hills Therapy Services.

Custom moulded seating is often used for people with severe, fixed deformities. However, many people are concerned about the impact that moulded seating has on pressure management. Potential problems related to pressure care include the system being used incorrectly, people being positioned incorrectly, maintaining the one position for long periods of time, sweating, continence management and transferring difficulties. This paper will cover the basic principles of pressure care as it relates to custom moulded seating. It will also address issues related to pressure care and how to avoid or minimize them. Some case studies will also be used to illustrate these techniques. An overview of research into pressure management with custom moulded seating will be given. At the end of the presentation it is expected that the audience will have a clear understanding of when to use custom moulded seating for people with pressure concerns, how to identify risks for pressure areas in these people and how to minimize those risks.
