"Because we see ourselves working" - Adaptive technology in the workplace
Damien McCormack,
Adaptive Technology Consultant, RVIB.
Adaptive Technology describes any equipment or technology that assists people in accessing their environment. For someone with a vision impairment this technology can be as simple as attaching large print stickers to the keyboard or as complex as a portable note-taker that is accessed using speech or Braille. With the aid of a wide range of adaptive technology available to assist individuals who are vision impaired and some simple adaptations of the workplace, individuals with impaired vision are employed in a wide range of industries and careers. RVIB provides a worksite assessment service to assist an individual who is blind or vision impaired to identify what adaptive technology and workplace adaptations they require and works with the individual and the employer to implement these recommendations. Several case studies will be presented to demonstrate the types of adaptive technology and workplace adaptations that are commonly used by individuals with impaired vision in the workplace and the role the assessment process has in identifying and implementing the adaptive technology and workplace adaptations.
