Oak Lifestyle Options provides support services for people with intellectual disabilities to access the community. In a joint pilot project with Tech Assist Online we have explored the significance of assistive technology and training needs for clients and staff. We explore the benefits of technology for people with disabilities using person centred approaches to maximise motivation, successful outcomes and enjoyment for the participants. We want to build on the philosophical and theoretical basis that there is great personal satisfaction and empowerment for participants when choosing the goals and topics of interest and relevance to them, which is greatly enhanced through the use of Information Technology. Participants benefit from new experiences and learning opportunities which provide initial success and tangible outcomes to give an immediate lift in self-esteem and motivation. We share the achievements of participants and staff at Oak Lifestyle Options using information technology.
The presentation presents the benefits of collaboration with Tech Assist Online in the assessment, training and support provided by Communication Access, Calvary Health Care Tasmania.
- Introduction:
- Background of Oak Lifestyle Options and the establishment of the Tech Assist Online service in Tasmania, including the collaboration with Communication Access, Calvary Health Care Tasmania www.techassist.org.au
- Person centred focus:
- Using Information Technology to assist the person to achieve tangible success which will maximise motivation, successful outcomes and enjoyment for the participant.
- Access and equity issues:
- Assistive technology eliminates barriers - allowing for full use of email - speaking to people who can't see, read or write - allowing people who are unable to use the keyboard or other physical devices to speak into the computer, eliminating some of the barriers due to limited mobility problems or excessive fatigue. It is often financially prohibitive to obtain individual support which allows freedom of choice to participate in chosen activities 24/7.
- Assessing complex needs - communication access, Calvary Health Care Tasmania:
- The benefits of collaboration with Tech Assist Online and access to the pool of assistive technology provides opportunity for trial and long term loans and reassessment when needs change reducing the cost burden on all involved. The access to equipment from TOA also allows for the development of client skills over a longer period of time without the pressure of short term assessment/trial structures. The loan pool of equipment reduces the impact of abandonment of technology. The training offered to skill support workers is paramount in the achievement of successful outcomes.
- Empowered to grow:
- Using the internet allows opportunities for personal empowerment through choosing the goals and topics of personal interest, ensuring the best potential to maintain the learner's motivation. The fail-safe training methods ensure tangible outcomes and an immediate lift in self-esteem.
- Case studies:
- Quality person centred learning outcomes have been achieved by combining practical aspects of the following programs with the use of computer technology.
- Using assistive technology to achieve client goals; person centred gardening program, person centred dynavox and literacy training, pictorial narrative, supporting TAFE students to complete I.T. courses, language development and creative writing.
