When matching AAC devices to the user's needs and skills, an important category of characteristics to consider is physical construction. This includes how the communication device is to be mounted or placed so that the user has optimal physical and visual access to the device and, where necessary, attachment of device components to a wheelchair. Although a system may work well in the assessment situation, it will not be effective in everyday use unless the user has access to it at all times. Funding schemes that have some capacity to subsidise mounting systems for communication devices often require an extended trial of the system prior to funding approval. This paper will present the process of assessment and trial of mounting systems at ComTEC and a summary of follow up study findings including user perspectives on satisfaction with mounting systems.
