Using Dynavox speech devices to support teaching literacy
Jane Farrall
Literacy is one of the most important skills we develop which contribute to inclusion and participation. Literacy allows us to communicate without barriers, and with the advent of the internet and email as everyday modes of communication this skills is more important than ever. Many people with complex communication needs require specific, tailored intervention to allow them to achieve their literacy goals. A balanced literacy approach, including working with words, writing, guided reading and independent reading has been shown to be successful with this group. This presentation will outline the features of Dynavox communication devices which allow them support literacy teaching for these individuals. Specific examples of pages which have been used to promote literacy development will be shown, and two case studies will be presented to outline how Dynavox speech generating devices have supported two very different students to progress in this area. Examples will be shown of appropriate activities for students of all ages.
