Global Symbol Institute: Software on-line and on-demand

The Global Symbol Institute is a new concept and method of delivery for symbol based software. Users can log in and access a range of programs utilizing symbols to assist with language learning and development. Current programs include a "symbol writer" program, dynamic display AAC software, language translator and more. All programs and the full symbol library are stored on the Unlimiter server, thus allowing users to log on to the site and access all of the programs from any computer anywhere in the world. There is no need to install any files to your local computer.

The symbol set used in these programs has been developed over 10 years by Unlimiter, and includes more than 4000 symbols in five different formats - simple drawings (cartoon style) in colour or black and white, realistic drawings in colour or black and white and an extensive photo library. Each symbol has a corresponding sound file with a high quality digitized recording, available in multiple languages.

This paper will present this new approach to delivering software and will include a demonstration of the current range of programs, and a discussion of benefits and issues for end users.
