AAC devices can provide a "voice" for people who have complex communication needs, helping to enhance their communication opportunities, social interaction skills and active participation at home, school, work or in the community. AAC technology can be helpful with individual users and also with groups (eg. in a classroom setting). Getting started with AAC technology is often challenging. It can be overwhelming keeping up with the ever-increasing range of technology available and determining which device will best meet a particular person's needs.
This paper will involve demonstration of a range of simple, static display, recorded speech AAC devices, including single message devices, sequencing devices and multiple level devices. Comparative information about the features of different devices will be provided. Factors to consider when choosing a suitable device will be discussed (eg. portability, accessing options, durability, recording time, accessories, environmental factors). Strategies for promoting communication through using devices with children and adults, both in one-to-one situations and in group settings, will also be presented.
