This paper explores the trial use of videos/DVDs in meeting the challenge of providing support for the use of electronic communication devices in metropolitan and rural locations across victoria.
The Aids and Equipment Program - Electronic Communication Devices Scheme of Victoria issues an average of 400 communication devices across Victoria each year, from a single issuing centre located in metropolitan Melbourne. Approximately 30% of equipment issued is to clients in rural locations and while training and ongoing support is always offered, due to issues with time travel and associated costs, face to face training is not always possible. "Training" videos/DVDs were therefore produced containing the basics of how to use two of the most commonly issued devices at the time and made available to clients and their teams as a supplement, or in some cases an alternative to face to face training.
Over a 2 year period 30 videos/DVDs have been provided across the state and recipients were requested to return a questionnaire rating the effectiveness of the videos/DVDs in supporting their initial learning and ongoing use of the equipment. Results of the questionnaire and their implications for further use of multimedia in the aids and equipment electronic communication devices scheme, to support clients and their teams, will be discussed.
