Testing times for assistive mechanical technology
Lloyd Walker and Alex Svistounov
NovitaTech, Adelaide
NovitaTech operates Australia's only nationally and internationally accredited mechanical testing facility that focuses on assistive technology. As a result the centre gains a good understanding of the current state of technology being offered for sale in Australia, and increasingly its performance in comparison with international items. Following a statistical review of test reports over the last three years, we have found that only 27% of items pass standards testing in full the first time. Most failures under test (44%) are due to strength of the chair. It is encouraging to see that Australian products are slightly above average during test, but poorer in meeting documentation and labelling requirements. The presentation will outline some of the trends and differences between products to inform users, professionals and manufacturers, of areas that can be improved or to watch out for, especially in items that haven't yet passed standards testing.
