Role Models

A role model is some one you can learn and take guidance from. They help shape your character and values.

Over the years I have met a few people who have impacted my life, but my biggest role model is my mom. She taught me to be my own person and go after what I want in life. She also showed me the importance of being generous and loving to others.

During my college years one professor was my role model, her name was Dr Judy Dunham. Judy was the head of the learning disabilities education department. She taught me professional values and helped me figure out what my purpose was in life - that was to help people with disabilities.

After college I got into the writing business. I submitted my column idea to the Livonia Observer editor Renee Skoglund, who gave me a chance to prove myself. She gave support, advice and confidence. I contribute part of my success as a columnist to her guidance.

Even after her passing I still remember her words of wisdom, giving me support as I look over past columns and emails. Whenever I make a contact I focus on the good and what I can learn from them. As people we share experiences, ideas and set examples.
