Daden Launches Accessible Web Browser for Second Life
Daden Navigator, the first publicly available web browser for Second Life was launched 15 July 2008 by virtual world consultants Daden Limited.
Second Life is an online, 3D virtual world, imagined and created entirely by its Residents, many of whom are people with disability.
The new browser allows residents of the virtual world to collaboratively browse the web, sharing one web screen between users who may, in real life, live on different continents.
"Daden Navigator provides all the functions that you expect to see in a normal web browser. It lets you set a home page or a bookmark, view bookmarks, and has back, refresh and search buttons. It is as close as you can currently get to a normal web browser in Second Life." Daden MD David Burden
Web sites require no special coding to work with Daden Navigator, and because the new browser is based on technology that was originally developed for people with vision impairment "it suddenly makes Second Life residents acutely aware of web accessibility issues" says its developer. "If a web site is accessible it will work well with Daden Navigator, if it isn't then Second Life users, just like visually impaired users, will struggle."
