Restraints

Safety restraints are important for both the equipment and the passenger. If possible, the best option is for the passenger to transfer from the wheelchair to a standard vehicle seat and use the traditional safety belt (or child safety harness) that complies with the Australian standards. The wheelchair or scooter is then secured in the back of the vehicle.

However, transfering from a wheelchair is not always possible and some passengers require the additional support provided by customised seating (usually built into their wheelchair). In this instance the wheelchair needs to be secured using a four-point tiedown attached to securement points on the wheelchair and floor anchor points installed in the vehicle. As well as restraining the wheelchair, postural supports and a lap belt or passenger harness is necessary to ensure the person is secured safely in the event of an accident.

Electric retractable restraint

This wheelchair restraint is designed to allow long reach for easy hookup by a seated occupant. The automatic lock enables independent operation by the occupant from a wheelchair. It has a four point locking system designed with 2 meters of reach, providing easy access so it can be connected to the front of the wheelchair. It then automaticaly retracts as the chair goes forwards into position. The electric release is then used to reverse the wheelchair and unhook it, again providing easy access.

Electric locking stations

A fully automatic wheelchair lock for occupant operation from wheelchair. This locking station allows the person to stay seated in their wheelchair and activate the restraint by simply driving their wheelchair over it. A push button is used to release the lock.
