Weaving at Braille House
An extra activity provided for the vision impaired clients of Braille House is hand weaving. We have at present five weavers working on four shaft table looms, making patterned weaves.
Most of the weaving is done with cotton thread, and articles made include place-mats, tea-towels, bags and more. Sometimes wool is chosen to make scarves or other fabric.
Mostly, the weavers make articles for their own use or as gifts. They also like to put entries into the Craft Section of the RNA Show, which has a special category for vision impaired entrants.
The blind weavers are helped by a team from the Queensland Spinners', Weavers' and Fibre Artists' Group. This program has been running in its present form for about 25 years.
