ABA In Touch - 30 March 2005
Hello to All,
Thank you for the feedback on our last ABA In Touch release - "UEB in a nutshell". It is pleasing to know that so many of you found the brochure useful information which will help us all to better understand the proposed changes within the UEB code.
In this "ABA In Touch" bulletin we update you on the Braille Proficiency Test which was held late last year. I feel certain that you would want to join with me in congratulating the successful candidates and in encouraging those who did not do so well to keep up their enthusiasm for Braille and to work hard at improving their knowledge of the Braille code.
Our thanks to Frances Gentle who convened the marking panel and for contributing this report.
If you have ideas for topics to cover, or would like to submit a contribution for circulation, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards and good reading
Christine Simpson (on behalf of ABA Executive)

2004 Test of Proficiency in English Literary Braille
By Frances Gentle
ABA National Examinations Board
The National Executive of the Australian Braille Authority offered the Test of Proficiency in English Literary Braille during the period 25th October to 7th November 2004. Examination Board members were Josie Howse, Bruce Maguire and Frances Gentle. Marking was completed in late 2004, and candidates provided with their test results before the 2004 Christmas period.
Eight candidates sat the test, with five successfully achieving the proficiency certificate. Candidates who did not pass the test were provided the opportunity to re-sit an alternative test in January 2005.
The Examinations Board and National Executive members wish to extend their congratulations to the following successful candidates:
- Leonie Blessing (NSW)
- Lyn Harper (NSW)
- Isobel Laverty (SA)
- Faye Rowbottam (WA)
- Sue Wade (NSW)
The Examination Board wishes to advise that there will be no proficiency test in 2005, due to the proposed changes to the Australian literary braille code. The Board will await the decision on the future code, which will be made at the Annual Meeting of the Australian Braille Authority at the Round Table Conference in Sydney on Saturday 14th May. It is anticipated that the proficiency test will be offered again in 2006.
Readers are urged to attend the Annual Meeting of the Australian Braille Authority in Sydney on 14th May. It is a unique opportunity to be part of the decision-making process relating to the future of braille codes in Australia.
