The rapid improvement in the technology sector over the past 25 years has reduced the level of inequity in information access for some and hindered others, leaving a considerable amount of work still to be done. Estimates still state that as little as 3% of the world's information material is accessible to people with print disabilities.
With the current ageing of the population in many countries and the resultant increase of people with a print disability, access to information at all areas of life is becoming an even more important issue.
To fully embrace the possibilities presented by technological advances it is important to address a number of issues to ensure information to all persons with a print disability is provided in a timely manner, and in a format of individual choice. Perspective must be maintained, in both the promotion and use of technology, for and by people with a print disability, so as to assist not hinder, to include not preclude.
To focus the 2007 Conference issues and to lead participants in topics relating to print disability, corresponding lifestyle options and the role of technology, the following key areas were addressed:
- Education and Training
- Technology, digital access and individual choices
- Scientific Research in the uptake or otherwise of Adaptive Technology and/or digital access by the over 50s
- Libraries
- Lifestyle Choices - children, teens, youth, adult, aged
- Legislations
