We invite you to Adelaide to the 2009 Biennial Conference of the South Pacific Educators in Vision Impairment. Adelaide is a wonderful city that boasts beautiful parks and gardens, wide sandy beaches, excellent eating places, out standing wines, theatre and entertainment. Adelaide provides a wonderful location for this major southern hemisphere gathering of professionals in vision impairment and we invite you to experience its festive atmosphere and open, easy going lifestyle.
The SPEVI biennial conference attracts highly respected national and international speakers who will interest and challenge you. The conference is structured so that you are able to explore your area of interest by following strands through out a whole day’s program. On the other hand you will have the opportunity to sample a variety of topics throughout the week and to interact with others with similar interests.
The conference will feature plenary and concurrent sessions during which practitioners, distinguished academics, researchers will present their work on eye conditions common in children, vision assessment, approaches to teaching and learning, aspects of the expanded core curriculum, service provision, partnerships and transition. Parents will also present on their choices and challenges in bringing up a child with vision impairment.
Keynote speaker
Dr Steve McCall is a Senior Lecturer in Education, Visual Impairment in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham, UK. He is vitally interested in the delivery of education for blind children in developing countries, literacy through Braille and Moon, and literacy for children with a visual impairment and additional disabilities. Dr McCall is also on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Visual Impairment.
Conference theme
The Conference theme Choices and Challenges is designed to explore both current and futuristic ideas. The themes Vision Impairment, Adaptive Technology, Early Intervention and Partnerships. Threads across each theme are medical perspectives, international focus, multiple impairment, partnerships, transition, and challenges and choices. The focus throughout the conference is on children with vision impairment.

Call for papers
SPEVI invites abstracts from individuals and groups interested in presenting a concurrent paper or poster at the 2009 South Pacific Conference. The Conference Program Committee is seeking submission of abstracts that will address practices and research that promote positive learning outcomes and inclusive practices for students with vision impairment and their families. Areas of special focus for this conference relate to the themes: Vision Impairment, Adaptive Technology, Early Intervention and Partnerships and the threads within each theme: medical perspectives, international focus, multiple impairment, partnerships, transition, and challenges and choices.
Abstract submission
Authors are invited to submit a 500 word abstract (text only) that concisely outlines the aims and content of the paper.
All abstracts are to be submitted electronically in accordance with the guidelines below and should be received by the Conference Secretariat by 29 February 2008.
Authors may submit more than one abstract, but the organizing committee reserves the right to accept only one of these if there are insufficient spaces available on the program.
Authors may indicate their preference for oral versus poster presentation in their covering email, however, the organizing Committee reserves the right to allocate abstracts to either oral or poster presentations.
Authors with accepted abstracts must register and pay to attend the conference – timing of notification of acceptance will allow presenters to take advantage of early bird registration fees.
All abstracts should include the following details:
- full title of presentation
- names of authors and affiliation
- contact details including name of key contact
- full mailing address
- phone and fax details
- email addresses (essential contact)
- an indication of your preference for oral or poster presentation
Abstract guidelines
- The lodgement of this abstract does not indicate automatic inclusion in the Conference Program
- Lodgement of an abstract acknowledges you consent to publication of the abstract on the website and in the abstract handbook provided to all delegates (if accepted)
- Abstract receipt and acceptance will be acknowledged to the person submitting the abstract
- Further communication will be with the submitting author only unless otherwise directed
- Name the paper using your "surnameSPEVI" for example "JonesSPEVI.doc"
- Email your abstract as an attachment to the Conference Secretariat: Jessica@aomevents.com by 29 February 2008
Successful authors will be notified by the end of May 2008. On acceptance of the proposed papers authors will be asked to submit a formally prepared paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings. Specific paper and speaker instructions and program timings will be forwarded in due course.
