Keynote Speaker Steve McCall (BA. Hons, PGCE, Dip CTB, PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Birmingham and is a Co-Director of the University’s Visual Impairment Centre for Teaching and Research (VICTAR). Prior to his appointment to the University of Birmingham in 1986 as a tutor to training programmes for teachers of the visually impaired, Steve worked for 13 years as a qualified teacher of children with visual impairment in special and mainstream schools in the North and South of England. Steve has developed particular research interests in: the delivery of education for children with visual impairment in developing countries; literacy through braille and literacy through the Moon code; online enquiry based learning as a vehicle for training teachers of children with VI. He has published widely in academic journals and is co-author of the books Visual Impairment - Access to Education for Children and Young People (1997) and Learning through Touch (2002). He is co-editor of the British Journal of Visual Impairment. He was vice president of the International Council for the Education of Children with Visual Impairment (ICEVI) 2002-6, and is married with 3 children.
